AC tuneup incomplete without duct test

AC Tune-Up is Incomplete without a Duct Leakage Test

Now that we are in the summer months many people are getting an air conditioning tune up service.  HVAC Contractors are advertising tune up service at really low rates.  Homeowners are seeing this advertising and think it's a cheap and easy way to get their air conditioning running in top shape.

Most AC tune-ups include running the system and checking the refrigerant pressures and temperatures, checking air flows, and checking the return and supply static pressures.  I have yet to see a tune up service that inculdes checking the ducting system for air leakage.  Duct leakage is huge problem that should be tested with every tune up service.  The average ducting system in California is around 30%.

Even the most efficient air conditioning system could be over working and underperforming if your ducts have above normal leakage.  Alot of furnace and blower systems are located in the garage, or up in the attic.  If they are leaking they are bringing hot air into AC system in the summer time, and cold air into the furnace in the winter time.
